The short answer

Shortlist ChatGPT’s web research workflow and Gemini’s research offering, then run the same question through both. Prefer the result with current primary sources, checkable claims and explicit uncertainty. We have not measured comparative citation accuracy, so this is a decision guide rather than a ranked test.

Give both tools the same research question

Specify the decision, geography, date range and acceptable evidence. Ask for primary sources, a table of findings and unresolved questions. Use a topic you can check independently. Without a defined scope, a longer answer may simply include more irrelevant information.

Score citations before prose

Select five important claims from each answer. Check that each link opens, the source supports the claim, the information is recent enough and any caveat survives into the summary. Look for independent sources instead of multiple articles repeating one announcement. Record unsupported statements even when the rest of the report reads well.

Choose for the next step in your work

Consider where the notes will go and who needs to review them. A well-supported summary that fits your document workflow may be more useful than a polished report you must reconstruct. Save the links and research date so later changes can be checked. For high-impact decisions, inspect the underlying evidence before acting.

Which tool is more accurate?

We have not run a controlled comparison that establishes a general winner. Use the citation check above on your topic, and repeat it as products and sources change.
