The short answer
Start with GitHub Copilot when GitHub and editor assistance are central to your development process. Include Claude Code when comparing tools for delegated coding tasks. Both should be judged on completed, reviewed changes in your repository; this guide does not claim benchmark superiority for either.
Compare your options
| Tool | Consider it for | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| GitHub CopilotOfficial source | Assistance and agent tasks within GitHub’s development workflow. | Features vary by client, plan and organisation policy. |
| Claude CodeOfficial source | A coding tool to include in a trial of delegated development work. | Check current plan entitlements and usage limits before a long task. |

Use a repository task, not a puzzle
Choose a contained issue with clear acceptance criteria, an existing test suite and a known starting commit. Run each candidate from that same commit. Compare correctness, unnecessary changes, test coverage and the review work needed. Do not count a task as finished because the assistant says it is: run the checks independently.
Compare the cost of a finished change
Record subscription or usage costs, retries and your time spent supervising. A tool can look fast while generating changes that take longer to review. If you mostly need small inline suggestions, evaluate that pattern separately from an agent working through a multi-file task. The best choice may differ between those two jobs.
Check fit before adopting it across a team
Confirm editor support, repository permissions, organisation settings and how the tool handles your code. Agree when a developer must review a change and which checks are mandatory. Keep a short record of failed tasks as well as successful ones so your decision is based on typical work rather than a showcase example.
Common questions
Does the model name tell me which coding tool is better?
No. Repository context, integrations, feedback from tests and the review workflow affect the result as well as the underlying model.
